The dahlia, a spectacular and highly varied flower native to the high plains of Mexico and Central America, is botanically a genus of tuberous perennial plants belonging to the Asteraceae family, the same as sunflowers and daisies. With an astonishing range of over 42 species and thousands of hybrid cultivars, dahlias are cultivated globally for their dramatic blooms that span nearly every color except true blue, and range in size from tiny 2-inch pompons to massive "dinnerplate" types up to 10 inches across. The flowers are classified into over a dozen forms based on petal shape and arrangement, including the spiky Cactus types, the perfectly spherical Ball and Pompon types, and the broad-petalled Decorative and Waterlily forms, offering immense diversity for garden display and cutting.
