How to Grow Lotus from Seeds
1. Choose Quality Seeds
Pick mature lotus seeds (hard, black, and round).
Avoid seeds that float in water—they’re usually not viable.
2. Scarify (Scratch) the Seed
Use sandpaper, a file, or a knife to gently scrape one side of the hard seed coat until the brown layer shows.
This helps water enter and speeds germination.
3. Soak the Seeds
Place the scarified seeds in a glass or bowl of warm water (25–30°C).
Change the water daily to prevent fungus.
Seeds will start swelling and sprouting in 3–7 days.
4. Transplant to Soil
When sprouts are about 15–20 cm long, plant them in a wide container with 10–15 cm of clay/loamy soil at the bottom.
Gently press the roots into the soil and cover lightly.
Fill the container with 10–15 cm of water above the soil level.
5. Place in Sunlight
Lotus loves full sun—at least 6–8 hours daily.
Keep the water clean and at a warm temperature.
6. Care & Growth
Do not use chemical fertilizers until the plant has at least 5–6 leaves.
Add a slow-release aquatic fertilizer during the growing season.
Maintain water depth as the plant grows (20–30 cm for mature plants).
Best Season for Lotus in India
Sowing Time : February to April (warm season) for best germination.
Blooming Season : Usually from June to September during monsoon and early autumn.
Lotus needs warm water and full sunlight for strong growth.
