How to Grow Bajra Napier Grass from Seeds
1. Season for Planting
Best Time :
Kharif Season : June to August (monsoon) – Best for rain-fed areas.
Rabi Season : February to March – in irrigated regions.
Reason : Bajra Napier needs warm weather and grows best at 25–35°C.
2. Soil Preparation
Prefers loamy to sandy loam soil with good drainage.
pH range : 5.5 – 8.5.
Plough the land 2–3 times to make the soil fine and weed-free.
Mix in well-rotted farmyard manure (FYM) or compost before sowing.
3. Seed Sowing
Seed Rate : About 4–5 kg per acre.
Spacing : Rows 50–60 cm apart, plants 30–45 cm apart.
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep.
You can sow directly in the field or raise seedlings in a nursery and transplant.
4. Watering
Requires regular irrigation in dry conditions.
First irrigation after sowing, then every 7–10 days (in summer) or 15 days (in cooler weather).
Avoid waterlogging.
5. Fertilizer
At sowing : Apply Nitrogen:Phosphorus:Potassium (N:P:K) – 40:20:20 kg per acre.
Split nitrogen into 2–3 doses : one at sowing, rest after each cutting.
6. Growth & Cutting
First cutting : 60–75 days after sowing.
Subsequent cuttings : every 45–50 days.
Bajra Napier is a perennial – yields for 3–4 years with good care.
7. Pest & Disease Control
Generally hardy, but watch for stem borers, aphids, and leaf blight.
Use neem spray or recommended mild pesticides if needed.
