Sterculia foetida, also known as the wild almond tree or Java olive tree, is a plant species that has various uses and characteristics. It is a soft wooded tree that can grow up to 35 meters tall. The plant’s leaves are palmately compound with 7-9 leaflets, and the petioles emit a foul smell. The flowers are large, green or purple, and unisexual due to the tree being dioecious. The fruit consists of follicles containing seeds, which turn scarlet when ripe. Sterculia foetida has been found in various regions including India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Indonesia, Ghana, Australia, and more.
The oil extracted from Sterculia foetida has been found to be suitable for biofuels and contains cyclopropenefatty acids (CPFA) such as malvalic acid and sterculic acid. However, there are concerns about the toxicity of the seeds which are edible but purgative; they should be roasted before consumption. Some studies suggest that CPFA like sterculic acid may have carcinogenic effects on animals and could be harmful to human health if consumed.
In Vietnam, Sterculia foetida is known as “Trôm,” and its sap is harvested for use in a soft drink called “Mủ Trôm.”
Therefore, bakso badam does not directly relate to Sterculia foetida or its common names or uses based on the information available.
