What is Tarpan in Hinduism?

Tarpan is a Hindu ritual that involves offering water and prayers to one’s ancestors, in order to honor and express gratitude towards them. The word “Tarpan” comes from the Sanskrit word “Tarpanam”, which means to satiate or satisfy.

In Hinduism, it is believed that the souls of the departed ancestors continue to exist and influence the lives of their descendants. Through Tarpan, the living members of the family offer water, black sesame seeds, and other offerings to their ancestors on special occasions, such as on Amavasya (the new moon day), Pitru Paksha (the fortnight dedicated to honoring the ancestors), and during various Hindu festivals.

The Tarpan ritual is usually performed by a Brahmin priest, who recites Vedic mantras while performing the offering of water and other items. The water used in the ritual is considered to have purifying and sanctifying properties, and it is believed that offering it to the ancestors helps to remove any sins or negative karma that may be affecting the family.
