The dragon fruit plant, commonly called pitaya, is a climbing cactus belonging to the genus Hylocereus (and Selenicereus). Unlike desert cacti, it thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. Stem : The plant has long, fleshy, green, triangular stems with wavy edges. Each edge has small spines, and the stems grow by climbing or sprawling, usually supported by poles or trees. Roots: Besides underground roots, the plant develops aerial roots along the stems that help it cling to supports and absorb moisture. Flowers: Dragon fruit produces large, white, fragrant flowers known as “night-blooming” flowers. They open only at night and usually wilt by morning. Each flower can be over 25–30 cm long. Fruit: The fruit is oval to round with bright pink, red, or yellow skin and distinctive green scales. Inside, the flesh is white, red, or purple, dotted with tiny black edible seeds. The taste is mildly sweet and refreshing. Growth habit: It is a fast-growing, perennial plant that can start fruiting within 1–3 years under good conditions. Uses: Dragon fruit is grown for its nutritious edible fruit, which is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C, and also valued as an ornamental plant because of its dramatic flowers.
