Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, better known as Munshi Premchand based on his pen name Premchand, was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. Premchand was a pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction.

Pariksha Guru was the first modern Hindi novel. It cautioned young men of well-to-do families against the dangerous influence of bad company and consequent loose morals. Pariksha Guru reflects the inner and outer world of the newly emerging Middle class. Pandit Gauri Datt (1837–1906) spent most of his life in Meerut. He started out as a school teacher but acquired considerable local influence as the founder of the Devanagari Pracharini Sabha, Meerut.
