How to Grow Cosmos from Seeds
Choose the right variety
Popular types : Cosmos bipinnatus (common garden cosmos) and Cosmos sulphureus (yellow/orange cosmos).
Prepare the soil
Cosmos thrives in well-drained, light soil (not too rich, as rich soil makes more leaves than flowers).
pH : Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).
Sow the seeds
Direct sow in the garden or in pots; they don’t like transplanting too much.
Scatter seeds lightly over soil and cover with just 0.5 cm of soil.
Space seeds about 20–30 cm apart for bushier growth.
Watering
Water lightly after sowing.
Keep soil slightly moist until seeds sprout (germination takes 7–10 days).
Once established, water only when soil is dry — cosmos is drought tolerant.
Sunlight
Needs full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best flowering.
Care & Maintenance
Thin seedlings if overcrowded.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
Avoid heavy fertilizing — too much nitrogen will reduce flowers.
Best Season for Growing Cosmos
In India (tropical/subtropical climates)
Main season : Sow in early spring (Feb–March) or post-monsoon (Sept–Oct).
Blooms start in about 8–10 weeks and continue for months.
In cooler regions
Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost, then transplant after frost danger passes.
Tip : Cosmos reseeds itself easily — once you plant them, you may find them popping up again
Country of Origin : India
