Lakadong variety of turmeric is named after a small village Lakadong situated in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya .It is considered to be one of the world’s best varieties of Turmeric with its highest curcumin content of about 6.9 – 7.5 % and a volatile Oil of around 3.4 to 4.7 %.
Lakadong Turmeric variety is indegenous to Meghalaya and was always found in wild growing on its own amongst other varieties of plants in the same genome and family.
This turmeric variety has an untold story dating back to generations.
A pandemic had hit the people here and clans where getting wiped out in days without anybody having a clue of what to do. It was then a wise man from Laskein area of Jaintia Hills made a blend from the Lakadong Turmeric found in the wild, drank it and gave the concoction to other family and clan members. Surprisingly the Family and the clan survived the pandemic and their generations lived on to tell us the story. Inspiring qualities of Lakadong Turmeric since then made it to the home kitchen garden of each household in and around Shangpung, Lakadong and other villages in Laskein Block of Jaintia Hills , Meghalaya.
As this variety of Turmeric has a dark Orange color pigment resembling Gold, back in the days women wore it as an Ornament , a necklace made of Lakadong Turmeric Beads. And this brings us to the name KSIAR meaning GOLD in Pnar language , the name “
