Tithonia, or Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia), is a fast-growing, heat-loving annual known for its bright orange or red-orange daisy-like flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Start seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before your last frost or sow directly outside after frost danger has passed, planting them ¼ inch deep in well-draining soil with full sun exposure. Seeds germinate in 5 - 10 days at soil temperatures of 70 - 80°F (21 - 27°C). Once seedlings have 2 - 3 true leaves and nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60°F (15°C), transplant them outdoors, spacing 18 - 36 inches apart. These plants thrive in hot, dry conditions and require moderate watering—let the soil dry out between waterings and generally don’t need fertilizing, as rich soil can reduce flower production. Tithonia blooms from mid-summer through fall and can grow quite tall (up to 6 feet or more), so staking may be necessary. While deadheading isn't essential, it can help prolong blooming, and the plant is typically pest and disease resistant. At the end of the season, you can collect seeds from dried flower heads for replanting, and in warmer climates, it may self-seed naturally.
