To grow hollyhocks from seed to flower, start by choosing quality seeds and sowing them either indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost or directly outdoors after the last frost or in late summer/fall for next-year blooms. Use well-draining, slightly alkaline soil enriched with compost, and plant seeds about ¼ inch deep, spacing them 12-18 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds typically germinate in 10-14 days, and once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light-either full sun outdoors or grow lights indoors. When seedlings develop a few true leaves, thin them to avoid overcrowding. Once established, hollyhocks grow tall stalks and may require staking for support. They usually bloom in their second year (as biennials), producing large, showy flowers along tall spikes from mid to late summer.
