Cestrum nocturnum, also known as night-blooming jasmine or queen of the night, is a fast-growing evergreen woody shrub in the Solanaceae family. Native to the West Indies but naturalized in South Asia, it grows best in average to moist soil that is light and sandy with a neutral pH of 6.6 to 7.5. The shrub can reach up to 13 ft tall and produces fragrant greenish-white or yellow flowers that emit a powerful sweet perfume at night.
The leaves of Cestrum nocturnum are simple, narrow lanceolate, and smooth with an entire margin. They range from 2.4 to 7.9 inches long and 0.79 to 1.77 inches broad. The plant’s inflorescences produce cymose clusters of mostly multi-flowered, drooping flowers with a tubular corolla and five acute lobes.
Night-blooming jasmine is grown as an ornamental plant for its heavily perfumed flowers and attracts pollinators such as butterflies. However, all parts of the plant are toxic to people and animals, especially the berries which contain solanine alkaloids.
Some reports suggest that ingestion of Cestrum nocturnum can cause respiratory problems due to its strong scent, feverish symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, and even death in extreme cases.
Despite its toxicity, night-blooming jasmine has medicinal uses such as larvicidal activity against mosquitoes and hematological changes in fish.
