The longan tree (Dimocarpus longan) is a tropical evergreen tree with the following characteristics :  

Size

The longan tree can grow up to 25 meters tall, but is typically 9–12 meters tall.

Leaves

The longan tree has compound leaves with 6–9 pairs of elliptic, ovate-oblong, or lanceolate leaflets. The leaves are glossy green on top and greyish-green underneath.

Flowers

The longan tree has small, yellowish-white flowers that can be staminate (male), pistillate (female), or bisexual.

Fruit

The longan tree produces almost spherical, yellowish-brown fruits that are commonly borne in hanging clusters. The fruit has a thin, leathery skin that covers a white transluscent pulp that surrounds a single dark seed. The fruit is somewhat similar to the related lychee.

Trunk and bark

The longan tree has a brittle trunk with brown, irregularly flaky bark when mature. The inner bark is cream.

Branches

The longan tree has branches with corky bark that splits and peels.

Origin

The longan tree is native to Asia, but has been introduced to other warm regions of the world, including Australia, Thailand, Hawaii, and Florida.
