Why need check valve :  

-If there is no check valve connected to the gas stone and the air pump, when the air pump stops working, because of the air pressure, water will flow back from the gas stone to the air pump, resulting in damage to the air pump. Especially when the air pump is placed under the fish tank, water backflow is likely to occur.
