The term "amaryllis lily" typically refers to plants in the genus Hippeastrum, which are popular for their large, showy, trumpet-shaped flowers. True Amaryllis (also known as the Belladonna lily or "naked lady lily") is a South African genus with more delicate flowers that appear before the leaves.
Description of the Amaryllis Lily Bulb (Hippeastrum)
The amaryllis bulb is a large, fleshy, and perennial underground storage organ that contains all the nutrients and embryonic flower stalks needed for the initial bloom. When purchased, the bulb should be firm and heavy, with no soft spots or mold.
Key characteristics : Â
Size Matters : The size of the bulb directly correlates to the number and size of the flowers it will produce; larger bulbs often yield 2-3 sturdy flower stalks, each bearing multiple blooms.
Structure : The bulb has a a rounded base (basal plate) where the roots emerge and a pointed end ("nose") from which the leaves and flower stalks sprout.
Appearance : They are typically brown on the outside and, when planted correctly, approximately one-third to one-half of the bulb remains exposed above the soil line to prevent rot.
Toxicity : All parts of the amaryllis plant, especially the bulb, are toxic to humans and pets if ingested due to the presence of alkaloids like lycorine.
