Rauvolfia serpentina is a native to the Indian subcontinent and East Asia.Rauvolfia is a perennial undershrub widely distributed in India in the sub-Himalayan regions.

its leaves are simple 7.5-10 cm long and 3.5-5 cm broad, bright green above and pale green beneath. The fruit is drupe, 0.5cm in diameter and shiny black when fully ripe. The root system consists of prominent, tuberous, soft tap root reaching a length of 30-50cm in 2-year-old plant with diameter 1.2-2.5cm. It also has small pink or white flowers. The plant has a prominent tuberous, soft taproot that reaches a length between 30 and 50 cm and a diameter between 1.2 and 2.5 cm

Propagation is carried out by planting seeds, root-culture or stem-cutting. Seed propagation gives better yield therefore cultivation of rauwolfia is usually carried out by seed propagation.
