The red sandalwood plant, also known as Pterocarpus santalinus, is a medium-sized deciduous tree with the following characteristics :  

Appearance : The red sandalwood tree has a clear trunk, a dense rounded crown, and a blackish-brown bark that resembles crocodile skin.

Leaves : The leaves are alternate, 3–9 cm long, and trifoliate with three leaflets.

Flowers : The flowers are produced in short racemes.

Fruit : The fruit is a pod 6–9 cm long containing one or two seeds.

Growth : The red sandalwood tree is a slow-growing tree that can grow up to a height of 30 meters (98 feet).

Timber : The wood is extremely hard and dark red in color.

Uses : The timber is used for carvings, furniture, poles, and house posts. The rare “wavy” grain variant is highly valued in Japan for its acoustic properties and is used to make musical instruments.

IUCN Red List status : The red sandalwood tree is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
