Botanical Description
Tree : The jackfruit tree is a large, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 30 to 70 feet (9 to 21 meters) and has a relatively short trunk with a dense, spreading crown. The bark is reddish-brown and smooth, and all parts of the tree exude a sticky, white latex when injured.
Leaves : The leaves are alternate and spirally arranged. They are thick and leathery, with a glossy, dark green upper surface. On young trees, the leaves may have irregular lobes, but on mature trees, they are typically entire (smooth-edged) and rounded.
Flowers : Jackfruit trees are monoecious, meaning they have both male and female flowers on the same tree. The flowers are small and are borne in separate clusters on short, stout stems that grow directly from the trunk and older branches. This phenomenon, known as cauliflory, is a defining characteristic of the jackfruit tree.
Fruit : The jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. It is a massive, oblong-cylindrical fruit with a thick, spiky, green-to-yellowish exterior. The fruit can weigh up to 80 pounds (36 kg) and can be over 3 feet (1 meter) long. The inner pulp is composed of numerous fleshy, bulb-like segments, each surrounding a seed. The fruit's flesh is a pale yellow to orange color, with a unique, sweet aroma.
