Watermelon seeds, known as "Migi" in some African and Middle Eastern cultures (especially in Hausa and other West African languages), are the edible seeds found inside the watermelon fruit (Citrullus lanatus). These seeds are flat, oval-shaped, and can be black, white, or brown depending on the variety and maturity. While often discarded when eating the fruit, watermelon seeds are highly nutritious and are commonly roasted, boiled, or ground into flour or paste in traditional cuisines.
In many African cultures, particularly in Nigeria, Ghana, and Sudan, dried and ground watermelon seeds are used to make a soup thickener known as "egusi", which is a key ingredient in dishes like Egusi soup.
