Best Season to Grow Ridge Gourd
Sowing Time (India) :
Kharif (Rainy) Crop – June to July
Summer Crop – January to March
Ridge gourd loves warm, sunny weather. Avoid extreme cold or frost.
How to Grow Ridge Gourd from Seeds
1. Seed Preparation
Soak seeds in water for 6–8 hours before sowing.
This softens the seed coat and speeds up germination.
2. Soil Requirements
Well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter.
pH : 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Mix compost or well-rotted cow dung before planting.
3. Sowing Method
Direct sowing is best — ridge gourd doesn’t like transplanting.
Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep in soil.
Spacing : 1 meter between plants and 2–3 meters between rows.
4. Watering
Keep soil moist until seeds germinate (about 7–10 days).
After germination, water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
5. Support / Trellis
Provide a bamboo trellis or net so vines can climb — improves air flow and fruit quality.
6. Fertilizer
Apply organic compost every 15–20 days.
If using chemical fertilizer : NPK (6:6:6) in small doses during growth.
7. Pest & Disease Care
Watch for fruit flies, aphids, and powdery mildew.
Use neem oil spray or organic pest control if needed.
8. Harvesting
Ready in 60–70 days after sowing.
Harvest young, tender gourds for best taste.
