How to Grow Sunflower from Seeds
1. Choose the Right Variety
Pick a sunflower type suitable for your purpose—tall ornamental for beauty or short/multi-headed for gardens and pots.
You can grow edible seed varieties if you want seeds for eating.
2. Best Season to Plant
In India :
Kharif season (Monsoon) – sow in June–July.
Rabi season (Winter) – sow in January–February in warmer states.
Spring/Summer – sow in March–April for ornamental use.
General rule : Plant when the soil is warm (18–25°C) and frost-free.
3. Site Selection
Needs full sunlight for at least 6–8 hours daily.
Avoid shady spots—flowers will be smaller and stems weaker.
4. Soil Preparation
Loose, well-drained sandy loam soil.
pH : 6.0–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic).
Mix in compost or well-rotted manure before sowing.
5. Sowing Seeds
Sow directly in soil (sunflowers dislike transplanting).
Plant seeds 2.5–5 cm deep, spacing :
Tall varieties : 45–60 cm apart.
Dwarf varieties : 25–30 cm apart.
Water lightly after sowing.
6. Watering & Care
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged until germination (7–10 days).
After seedlings are established, water once or twice a week deeply.
Add organic fertilizer or balanced NPK during early growth.
Stake tall plants to protect from wind.
7. Harvesting
Ornamental : Flowers bloom 60–90 days after sowing.
Country of Origin : India
