*Las Meninas* (The Maids of Honour) (1957)- In 1957, Picasso began an extensive series of modifications on Diego Velazquez's Las Meninas 1656. The series is a confrontation with one of the most famous works in Spanish painting history, as well as a commentary on current events in Spain as seen by Picasso from his exile in France.
