*Man with a Pipe* (1915)- The masterwork is full of gentle humour and a calm demeanour. Picasso's return to colour exploration and interest in the development of interior design procedures is signalled by the employment of Pointillist-style dots with their stippled look and marble-effect. The use of frieze-like techniques combined with architectural scrolling produces a sensation of mobility that counteracts the tension created by the solid piling up of angular blocks. The curling of smoke from the pipe in the lower right corner of the image is also connoted by these techniques. The half-figurative face, hands, and waistcoat fragment in this picture, but with comedic purpose, reflects the experimental return to Naturalism.
