*Musketeer* (1968)- Picasso, now in his nineties, brought a new figure into his work near the end of the 1960s : the musketeer. Long-flowing locks, neatly formed moustaches, and ruff collars distinguish these figures, which encapsulate the beauty and grace of Golden Age romantic heroes. Picasso received inspiration for these paintings from a variety of sources, including both Dutch and Spanish Old Masters. In this painting, Picasso has shown a seventeenth-century Spanish nobleman in a composition reminiscent of Rembrandt's and Velazquez's portraiture. The frontal view of the fictional sitter shows him proudly displaying his finest silks and satins to the world.
