*The Charnel House* (1945)- This is Picasso*s most overtly political painting since 'Guernica' of 1937. It was based on a short documentary film about a Spanish Republican family who were killed in their kitchen. Picasso, who had lost many friends and associates during the war, was mourning his family, the Spanish people.The Charnel House is the offensive and defensive weapon deployed : memento mori, indictment, tribute to sacrifice, howl of despair, and proof positive of lyric poetry after Auschwitz. it currently hangs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. ******** PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) is universally renowned as one of the most influential and celebrated artists of the twentieth century; in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this period.
