Assamese traditional jewellery is renowned for its unique aesthetic, symbolic motifs, and expert craftsmanship. Among its most cherished ornaments is the Pas Dugi, also popularly known as Dug-Dugi. Worn close to the heart, this pendant-like ornament carries deep cultural and emotional value for Assamese women.
What is Pas Dugi / Dug-Dugi?
The name Dug-Dugi is believed to be derived from the soft, heart-like shape of the ornament, which resembles a small drum or a teardrop turned inward — gently curved and symmetrical. “Pas Dugi” refers to a pair of these pendants or the way they are worn in a symmetrical, balanced manner. Traditionally made from gold, these pendants are strung onto a chain or a black beaded thread (mohur-suta) and worn around the neck.
Design and Craftsmanship
The Dug-Dugi’s beauty lies in its simplicity and symmetry. Typically, it is a lightweight, hollow ornament, often in the shape of a double-layered heart or an almond. Each Dug-Dugi features delicate embossed or engraved patterns, often floral or geometric in nature. Some versions may be adorned with mina (enamel) work in red, green, or blue, enhancing their visual appeal.
The ornament is handcrafted by Assamese Sonaris (goldsmiths), especially in regions like Jorhat, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. The hollow design not only makes it comfortable to wear but also adds to the melodic, soft "dug-dug" sound it migh
