Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), born Narendranath Datta in Kolkata, was a renowned Indian monk, philosopher, and disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. He played a key role in introducing Indian spiritual ideas of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, most notably through his powerful speech at the 1893 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, where he began with the famous words, “Sisters and brothers of America.” A champion of interfaith harmony, national pride, and social upliftment, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission and Ramakrishna Math, which continue to serve society through education, healthcare, and spiritual guidance. Vivekananda’s teachings inspired generations toward self-confidence, service, and spiritual awakening. His birthday, January 12, is celebrated as National Youth Day in India, honoring his belief in the power of youth to shape the future of the nation.
