The kneecap, also known as the patella, is a flat, triangular bone that protects the knee joint. It's the largest sesamoid bone in the body, and is located within the quadriceps tendon. The patella :

2.)Helps the quadriceps muscle move the leg

The patella sits in front of the knee joint, between the femur (thighbone) and tibia (shinbone). The femur has a groove that the kneecap slides along.

If the patella is shattered beyond repair, it can be removed in a procedure called a patellectomy. Sometimes, it can be replaced with prosthetic material.
