Best Season to Grow Lotus
In India : Start in late spring to early summer (March to June) when temperatures are warm (25°C to 35°C).
step-by-step guide to growing lotus flowers from seeds :
Step 1 : Get Fresh, Viable Seeds
Purchase seeds from a reputable supplier or collect them from mature lotus pods.
Healthy seeds are hard, dark brown or black, and about the size of a small marble.
✂ Step 2 : Scarify the Seeds
Lotus seeds have a hard outer shell that needs to be broken to encourage germination.
How to scarify :
Use a metal file, sandpaper, or a knife to gently nick or file one end of the seed.
Stop once you see the lighter inner layer. Do not cut too deep.
Step 3 : Soak the Seeds
Place scarified seeds in a container of warm water (around 25–30°C / 77–86°F).
Change the water daily to prevent rot.
Within 3–7 days, seeds will swell and begin to sprout.
Step 4 : Let Seedlings Grow
Once sprouted, let the seedlings grow in water for another 1–2 weeks.
Wait until they develop 2–4 leaves and small roots before transplanting.
Step 5 : Transplant to Soil
Choose a wide, shallow container or pond.
Container tips :
12–18 inches wide and 6–8 inches deep.
No drainage holes (to hold water).
Soil mix :
Use heavy clay soil or garden soil.
Avoid potting mix—it’s too light and may float.
Planting :
Press the seedling into the mud about 1–2 inches deep.
Add 2–4 inches of warm water
Country of Origin : India
