Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum, also known as Elephant Grass or Cenchrus purpureus) is a robust, perennial grass widely cultivated as a high-yield fodder crop for livestock. It is most commonly propagated using vegetative material such as stem cuttings or "sticks," root splits, or slips, rather than by seed due to inconsistent seed production.
Plant Characteristics :
Grows in tall, bamboo-like clumps, reaching heights of up to 4 meters (and up to 7–8 meters under optimal conditions).
Features deep roots, making it drought-tolerant and suitable for a range of climates, from high rainfall areas to drier zones, though it does not thrive in waterlogged soils.
The stems are soft and easy to cut when young, and the tender leaves and stems are highly palatable and nutritious for livestock.
Propagation and Planting :
Napier grass sticks are sections of young stems, each with at least three nodes, used for vegetative propagation.
Planting is typically done at the onset of the rainy season. Sticks are cut and planted at a 30-degree angle, ensuring at least two nodes are buried and one remains above ground.
Recommended spacing is 60 cm between plants and 90 cm between rows for optimal growth and ease of management.
Alternatively, root splits or slips (small clumps with roots and shoots) can be planted directly into prepared soil
