The three lines on a Shivling indicates the three ‘gunas’- Rajas, Satva and Tamas. These gunas are present in all human beings in more or less quantity. According to Yajurveda Lord Shiva is Nirguna “Na Tasya Pratima Asti”, i.e he is formless and is unaffected by either of the three gunas. The three lines are symbolic of Lord Shiva’s balance and divinity. Om In Hindu mythology, before the world began, Brahma (the creator or absolute reality) was one, and He said, “I am one, but may I become many?” This thought created a vibration that settled into a sound. This sound was Om. From this vibration, everything in the universe sprang into existence.
