Plant Description

Common Names : Dragon Fruit, Pitaya, Pitahaya

Botanical Name : Hylocereus undatus (and related species: H. costaricensis, H. megalanthus)

Family : Cactaceae (Cactus family)

Origin : Central and South America; now widely grown in Southeast Asia and other tropical/subtropical regions.

Appearance :  

Stems : Fleshy, triangular, green stems with spines along the edges; these are climbing cacti that need support structures.

Flowers : Large, white, fragrant, and nocturnal (bloom only at night, lasting one night).

Fruits : Oval-shaped, bright pink or yellow outer skin with scale-like “flames.” Inside is white, red, or magenta flesh with tiny edible black seeds.

Growing Conditions

1. Light

Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours of sunlight per day).

Can tolerate partial shade but fruiting will decrease.

2. Temperature

Ideal range : 65–85°F (18–29°C).

Sensitive to frost and prolonged cold; protect from temperatures below 40°F (4°C).

3. Soil

Prefers well-draining soil (sandy or loamy).

pH range : 6–7 (slightly acidic to neutral).

Avoid waterlogged soils — root rot is a common problem.

4. Watering

Water regularly but allow soil to dry between waterings.

Overwatering is the main cause of plant death.
