Eye test charts are used by eye doctors to measure visual acuity, or how clearly a person can see. The most common eye charts used are the Snellen, "Tumbling E", and Jaeger charts. The Snellen chart is the most common and is used by having patients read the chart from a distance of 20 feet away. The chart has letters of varying sizes, with fewer at the top and more at the bottom. The symbols on the chart are called "optotypes" and are meant to be read as block letters. The optotypes have a specific geometry, with the thickness of the lines and white spaces being equal, and the height and width of the letters being five times the thickness of the lines. The farther down the chart a patient can read, the better their visual acuity is. The top number on the chart refers to the distance from the chart, and the bottom number is the distance at which someone with normal vision could read the same line. For example, someone with 20/20 vision can see what the average person can see from 20 feet away.
