The Punjabi hair accessory and its millennial ties, stitched with pop culture nostalgia and new meanings
Dhaniya aka coriander. Prabhleen Kaur, creative director and contemporary mehendi (henna) artist picks the Indian kitchen staple as her muse for her latest Instagram post. The greens, knotted, laced and tied at the bottom of a thick braid are photographed with a ‘schiffli’ dupatta from péro’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection, ‘UP’. Kaur, who goes by thesologirl on Instagram, with more than 23.1 k followers, often uses her knee-length hair as canvas—strewn with gilded jewels, woven with flowers, studded with unusual details. The inspiration behind some of these braided experiments? The paranda (also known as the parandi), a hair accessory with its roots in Punjabi culture. “The earliest memory I have is of my buajis (paternal aunts) wearing parandis in their hair to make joodas (buns) and to add length,” says Kaur, who was born in Jalandhar, Punjab, but grew up in Delhi.
