Breaking any part of the Guggul tree releases a kind of fragrance from it. The gum obtained from this tree is called Guggulu. In Ayurvedic texts, the description of these five distinctions is found in Mahishaksha, Mahanil
Kumud, Padma and Hiranya Guggulu. Mahishaksha Guggulu is black in colour like a bumblebee. Mahaneel Guggulu is blue in color, Kumud Guggulu is colored like Kumud fruit, Padma Guggul is red like rubies and Hiranyaksha Guggulu
is golden i.e. has a gold aura. It is 1.2-1.8m high Branched is a tree with small thorns. It is thick, fragrant, multi-coloured, burnt in fire and melted in the sun, similar to milk when put in hot water. Guggulu in practical
use is a pale yellow pigment obtained from the bark, it is opaque, bloody-brown in colour and greyish-black in colour.
