Lion Capital is the top portion of Ashoka Piller
This was adopted as National Symbol in 1950 hence forming the motif on the obverse of all coins.
It needs to be noted that only that view ( of the four possible views) is a national symbol that shows horses and bull on the base with Chakra in the center.

The national emblem of India is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka that is now kept at the Sarnath Museum.
