This Ceramic Dancing Nataraja Shiva, as numerous other significant Hindu divine beings, is a perplexing person with a heap of qualities, at times apparently in struggle with one another. Likewise, in his appearance as Nataraja he is addressed in his triple job as Maker, Preserver and Destroyer. Shiva as a moving figure originally showed up in Indian stone sanctuary design in the fifth and sixth century CE, and it was only after the tenth century CE that the now natural detached sculptural portrayal, became standard. In this strikingly normalized structure, the god is shown moving inside a blazing radiance (prabha mandala) which addresses Time and which is displayed as a circle to represent the Hindu conviction that it is both repetitive and endlessly. The blazes of the ring sprout from the mouths of makaras or legendary ocean animals displayed at the foundation of the figure. The ring is more curve like in the main Ceramic models, as should be visible in one of the earliest getting by, the c. 875 CE mold inside the Shiva sanctuary at Nallur close to Tanjavur. In the long run, however, an ideal circle turns into the standard. The dance the grinning Shiva is performing is the Tandava, the grandiose dance which both makes and obliterates the universe. The energy and ferocity of the dance is displayed in his twisted knees and the excessive spreading of the god's hair. Shiva's locks
