Lord Shiva rides on Nandi, the bull. It means that Nandi is the vehicle of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu dharma, Nandi is considered to hold truth and righteousness. In Hindu dharma, every Hindu god has his/her own Vahana, which is the Sanskrit root for the word “Wagon”. He is not waiting for him to come out and say something. He is in waiting. Nandi is a symbolism of eternal waiting, because waiting is considered the greatest virtue in Indian culture. One who knows how to simply sit and wait is naturally meditative. He is not expecting Shiva to come out tomorrow. He will wait forever. That quality is the essence of receptivity. I was always wondering and it was baffling in my mind that why a Nandi and a Tortoise sit inside Shiv’s Temple. Most of us always visit temples, perform our rituals, pray and focus only on main deity of the temple, have pradakshina (Circumambulation) and leave the place with so much of devotion and positive energy. But nobody might have not seen or noticed there are many things placed in the temple, which are of symbolic significance to inspire the devotees in their spiritual practice. Among them, Nandi and Tortoise has got special predominance and symbolic significance.
