The hand cymbal, also referred to as manjira, boasts a rich heritage as a traditional hand percussion instrument hailing from India. Its nomenclature varies across regions, known as manjeera, tala, jalra, khartal, or kartal. In the realm of Indian folk music, the manjira holds profound significance. It finds its most prevalent usage during the aarti ceremonies dedicated to Indian deities, rendering devotional melodies that resonate with spirituality.
Interestingly, in Tibetan culture, a similar instrument takes form as the "tingsha," which is a diminutive counterpart to the manjira. These cymbals, known as tingsha, play a pivotal role in the prayer and rituals of Tibetan Buddhist practitioners. They consist of two cymbals thoughtfully tethered together by a leather strap or a cotton string.
The composition of manjira primarily involves iron metal, plated with brass.
