Pulasan/Nephelium Mutabile, which is sweeter than Rambutan and Lychee but less common outside Southeast Asia, is often eaten fresh. When ripe, the fruit has a dark red, leathery peel. Stubby, spines cover the skin of the conical-shaped fruit and give it an appearance that is closest to Rambutan. It is possible to get at the fruit's white, sweet flesh by twisting it open with both hands (similar to a lychee in texture). The pulasan tree is purely for show. The fruit is ovoid, dark red, with its thick, leathery rind closely set with conical, blunt-tipped tubercles or thick, fleshy, straight spines. There may be one or two small, undeveloped fruits nestled close to the stem. Within is the glistening, white or yellowish-white flesh is thick, more or less clinging to the thin, grayish-brown seed coat which separates from the seed. The flavor is generally much sweeter than that of the rambutan. The seed is ovoid, oblong, or ellipsoid, light brown, and somewhat flattened on one side.
