Best Season for Growing Papaya
Ideal Season : Summer and monsoon (in tropical climates)
Temperature : Papaya grows best in warm temperatures between 22°C – 35°C.
Avoid frost and waterlogging — papaya is sensitive to both.
In India, you can sow seeds Feb–March or June–July for best results.
How to Grow Papaya from Seeds
1. Collect & Prepare Seeds
Take seeds from a ripe papaya fruit.
Wash off the gelatin-like coating on seeds (this coating can prevent germination).
Dry the seeds in shade for 1–2 days.
2. Sowing Seeds
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil.
Sow seeds directly in the ground or in pots/polybags first.
Plant 2–3 seeds per hole about 1–1.5 cm deep.
Keep 60–80 cm spacing between plants if sowing in rows.
3. Germination
Seeds take 10–15 days to sprout.
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
4. Thinning
Once seedlings are 15–20 cm tall, keep the healthiest plant in each spot and remove the rest.
5. Care & Maintenance
Watering : Water regularly, especially in dry periods, but avoid standing water.
Fertilizing : Apply organic compost or balanced fertilizer every month.
Mulching : Helps retain moisture and control weeds.
6. Flowering & Fruiting
Papaya plants can be male, female, or hermaphrodite.
For fruit production, keep female or hermaphrodite plants.
Flowers appear in 3–4 months,
Country of Origin : India
