Shorea robusta, commonly known as the Sal tree, is a species of evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent. It belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae and is widely distributed across Nepal, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The Sal tree is highly valued for its timber, which is used in construction, furniture making, and various other applications.
The Sal tree typically reaches a height of 30-35 meters (98-115 feet) and has a girth of about 2-2.5 meters (6.5-8.2 feet). It has a straight trunk with a grayish-brown bark that becomes rough and fissured with age. The leaves are large, leathery, and glossy green in color, arranged spirally on the branches. Each leaf is pinnate, consisting of 5-9 leaflets that are elliptical or lanceolate in shape.
The Sal tree is deciduous, shedding its leaves during the dry season. However, it retains a portion of its foliage in areas with more favorable climatic conditions. The flowering season occurs from March to June when the tree produces clusters of small yellowish-white flowers. These flowers are bisexual and have five petals with numerous stamens.
