Sesbania grandiflora, commonly known as vegetable hummingbird, agati, katurai, or West Indian pea, is a fast-growing, soft-wooded leguminous tree in the Fabaceae family. Native to Maritime Southeast Asia-including Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Guinea-it is now widely cultivated throughout tropical regions globally.

Botanical Features

Size : Grows rapidly to heights of 5–20 meters (16–66 feet).

Leaves : Compound, pinnate leaves 15–30 cm long, with 10–20 or more pairs of oblong, rounded leaflets.

Flowers : Large, oblong, and showy; colors range from white and pink to red. Flowers are 1.5–10 cm long, produced in clusters of 2–5 at the base of leaves.

Fruit : Long, flat, slender seed pods (20–60 cm), containing 15–50 reddish-brown seeds. Seeds are ellipsoid to subreniform, slightly compressed, and glossy.
