The story begins in ancient China-inspired imperial court settings. Maomao, a smart and sharp-witted apothecary, works in the red-light district as a servant. One day, she is kidnapped and sold to the imperial palace as a servant in the rear harem (the women’s quarters), where she keeps her knowledge of medicine a secret to avoid drawing attention.

However, after noticing that two of the Emperor’s consorts and their infants are falling mysteriously ill, Maomao cannot ignore it. She secretly leaves a medicinal solution to help, which gets the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch with a mysterious aura. Intrigued by her knowledge and skill, h e begins to take a n interest in her.

By the end of the episode, Maomao is assigned to serve in the inner court more directly, setting the stage for her to get involved in palace intrigues, medical mysteries, and deeper secrets of the imperial world.
