Several small collections have been at different times made, from which he has extracted only a few words that were unknown to him, and which have been noted' in every case. The last column in this Vocabulary contains all the words used by the aborigines of the Andamans which he has been able to collect. He represents with a short account of the natives, their customs and habits and of previous attempts at colonization in a vivid manner. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. About the Author:-Frederik Adolph de Roepstorff was a Danish philologist who worked in the Andaman penal colony in India, in charge of the Nicobar Islands, where he was shot dead by a convict.
