*Aubade* (1942)- Aubade is a variant on the conventional serenade theme and is widely regarded as an important piece of the German Occupation period. The horrors of war and the claustrophobia of the curfew necessitate a suffocating and harsh atmosphere.The two women are held captive in a sterile and restricted area. Strident violet and green illuminate the gloomy colours, such as blacks, greys, and browns. The nude's corpse-like attitude, the angular, sharply defined forms of the female guard with the mandoline, the broken slats of the bed, and the angular, sharply defined forms of the female guard with the mandoline combine to produce a sensation of tightly strung tension.
