*Luncheon on the Grass* (1961)- Picasso worked on this series of paintings for more than two years, from August 1959 to September 1961, resulting in twenty-seven paintings and numerous drawings. He found an opportunity to return to a few of his favourite themes once more. Manet's composition, which depicts two naked women in a landscape with two clothed males, is a variety in and of itself. Picasso's changes are of a different kind : he uses Manet's composition as a springboard for his own imagination, which leads him in new, previously unimagined paths. Throughout this work, Picasso frequently deviates from his initial subject, only to return to it later and produce fresh versions on the theme.
