*** Ganga and Shantanu (1890) : King Shantanu was the great grandfather of ‘Pandavas’. The young Shantanu saw a beautiful woman on the banks of river Ganga, who was ‘Ganga’ herself. Prince Shantanu was mesmerized by the heavenly beauty of Ganga, and fell into love at the first sight. He asked her to marry him. Ganga agreed with a condition that he will never ask any question about her actions. She gave birth to a 7 children, but every time she used to drown child into river. For eighth time, Shantanu could not stop himself, and asked Ganga the reason. Then she explained about Brahma’s curse and boon too. But at the same time she vanished forever, and Shantanu was stuck with greif thinking about spending rest of his life without her. ****** Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) is thought-about among the best painters within the history of Indian art for variety of aesthetic and broader social reasons. His artworks are said to be among the most effective samples of the fusion of European techniques with a strictly Indian sensibility.
