*Man with a Clarinet* (1911)- After spending the summer in Céret with Braque, Picasso painted Man with a Clarinet, a masterpiece of Analytical Cubism, in the autumn of 1911. This pyramidal composition depicts a man clutching a musical instrument, of which only the most basic elements can be discerned, fanning out from the base. The man's body is constructed using only a few straight and curved lines, and colour is reduced to a wide variety of ochres and greys, allowing Picasso to generate stunning tonal contrasts and pictorial effects using a Neo-Impressionist approach. The great fragmentation of form, on the other hand, invites an abstract rather than figurative interpretation. ******** PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) is universally renowned as one of the most influential and celebrated artists of the twentieth century; in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this period.
