*Seated Woman (Marie-Therese)*(1937)- This cheerful painting was created in the outset of an incredibly productive year for Picasso, who produced several powerful works, including Guernica (1937). He had been re-energized by the effect of his young love and muse, and he had become a legend in his own lifetime. Strong vivid bars of colour are organised in such a way that the dress looks to be a costume in this picture, giving it a harlequinade feel.

The colour bands are superbly controlled by the black or white striations here, resulting in a fantastic succession of frenetic patterns throughout the body's contours.
